In Competition

New head of DG Comp appointed

22 September 2014

On 10 September, European Commission President-elect Jean-Claude Juncker announced the new organisational structure of the EU’s executive arm along with his new team of Commissioners, who are scheduled to take office in November 2014.

Margrethe Vestager is to become the European Union’s Commissioner in charge of competition policy. Vestager will succeed Joaquín Almunia, who is to leave office at the end of October.

Margrethe Vestager is Denmark’s former deputy prime minister and minister for economic and interior affairs. She has been a member of the Danish Parliament since November 2001 and hails from the centrist Danish Social Liberal Party.
